One of the most fascinating and unique traditions among the Zeme tribe of Nagaland is the Kwakpo tradition, a heartfelt celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters. This annual tradition takes place on October 30th and holds a deep cultural and emotional significance within the community.

The essence of Kwakpo lies in the exchange of gifts and the nurturing of familial ties. It begins when a sister gets married; during this milestone, she offers her brothers a small token of money—be it ₹30, ₹100, or more, depending on her capacity. This gesture symbolises her love and respect for her brothers. In turn, the brothers are bound to observe Kwakpo every year for the rest of their lives. On this day, they prepare and deliver meat and curry to their sisters as a sign of their enduring care and responsibility towards them.

This tradition goes beyond just one day. If the brothers are hunters and manage to catch wild game, they are expected to give a portion of the limb of the animal to their sisters, further solidifying their bond. The act reflects the Zeme tribe’s deep respect for family ties and their belief in sharing resources within the community.

I find this tradition truly heartwarming because it transcends the material exchange—it’s about honouring relationships and maintaining lifelong connections. It ensures that even after a sister marries and moves away, she is always remembered and valued by her brothers. It also strengthens the community spirit by teaching younger generations the importance of family and gratitude.

Being part of a Kwakpo celebration is an experience like no other. The atmosphere is filled with warmth and camaraderie. The brothers prepare the food with care, and the sisters receive it with smiles and blessings. It’s not just a tradition but a beautiful reminder of the enduring bond that ties siblings together, no matter where life takes them.

This tradition has left an indelible mark on me, demonstrating how cultural practices can nurture relationships and preserve harmony within families. It’s a treasure trove of lessons about love, respect, and the beauty of giving without expecting anything in return.
