One of my favourite childhood games that brings back a flood of memories is Hide and Seek. This game was a staple of my childhood, and I spent countless hours playing it with my siblings, neighbours, and friends from the local community. It was a game that required no special equipment, just a sense of adventure and a large area to explore. We would play it in various places, but it was most commonly played in my neighbourhood park or sometimes even in the backyard of my house.

The game is simple yet exhilarating. One person is chosen to be “it” and closes their eyes while everyone else runs off to find a hiding spot. The seeker then has to search for the hidden players, calling out their names once they’ve found them. The fun part of it, of course, was the suspense and the thrill of finding a perfect hiding spot where you felt like you were invisible. The joy would peak when you managed to stay hidden for the longest time, or when you would jump out and surprise the seeker.

What made Hide and Seek especially enjoyable was the element of surprise and the sense of freedom it gave us. We were able to explore and use our imagination in creative ways, finding unusual spots to hide or creating clever distractions to avoid being caught. The thrill of dodging the seeker and the laughter that would ensue once someone was caught made the game so much fun. I also recall the moments when we would team up and strategise on how to escape or lead the seeker on a wild goose chase. Those were the days when time seemed to fly, and the world felt full of possibilities.

The memories I have of playing this game are absolutely priceless. I can still vividly remember the excitement and the adrenaline rush of hearing the seeker’s footsteps getting closer and closer. There were countless times when we would run and hide, only to be found at the last second, or when we’d get caught and playfully complain about how unfair it was. Those moments were filled with laughter, friendship, and a sense of togetherness that’s hard to replicate as an adult.

What made this game even more special was how it fostered a sense of community. We would invite the whole neighbourhood to join in, and every game would be an opportunity to build connections with others. It didn’t matter whether you were the youngest or oldest; everyone had a chance to be the seeker or the hider.

Looking back, Hide and Seek wasn’t just a game—it was a way of making memories and forming bonds. It was an enjoyable part of my childhood, one that taught me the value of teamwork, patience, and creativity. Even though I no longer play this game, the memories of those carefree days remain with me, reminding me of the simple joys of childhood and the friendships I built through this playful tradition.
