OET SPEAKING

OET SpeakingMust knows

  • In each Speaking test, your identity and profession are checked by the interlocutor and there is a short warm-up conversation (not assessed) about your professional background.
  • OET Speaking test consists of two consecutive role plays.
  • Then the role-plays are introduced one by one, and you have three minutes to prepare for each. The role-plays take about five minutes each.

Role-plays – Must knows

  • You’ll receive role-play information on a card, which you can refer to during the role-play.
  • The card provides details about the scenario and your task.
  • While you’re allowed to take notes during role-play preparation, it’s advisable to avoid excessive note-taking. Instead, focus on thoroughly understanding the scenario.
  • You have 3 minutes of preparation time, which is typically sufficient for all role-play tasks. Approach each task calmly and read through them carefully.
  • If you have questions about the role-play content or process, feel free to ask during the preparation time. The interlocutor is there to assist you, not assess you, so maintain a friendly attitude.
  • The entire Speaking sub-test is recorded for assessment, emphasizing the need for clear and audible speech.
  • The Speaking sub-test is evaluated independently by a minimum of two trained OET Assessors.
  • Your test day interlocutor is not involved in assessing your performance.
  • The short warm-up conversation does not contribute to your assessment.
  • OET Assessors focus on specific criteria and tailor their evaluation to how you handle the given task on the day, reflecting real-life communication in healthcare settings.
  • Remember that OET assesses your English-language skills, not your professional knowledge.
