Introduction to IELTS Writing Task 2
IELTS Writing Task 2 is a critical component of the IELTS exam, assessing your ability to write a well-structured essay in response to a specific question. This task tests your writing skills, including your ability to argue a point, present ideas, and support them with examples.
In Task 2, you are required to write an essay of at least 250 words on a given topic. The essay types can range from opinion, discussion, and problem-solution essays to comparing ideas or evaluating arguments.
Marking Criteria
The IELTS Writing Task 2 is evaluated using four key criteria, with each contributing 25% to your overall score:
- Task Response: How well you address all aspects of the question, ensuring you answer directly and fully.
- Coherence and Cohesion: The logical flow of ideas and the clear, structured organisation of your essay.
- Lexical Resource: The range and accuracy of vocabulary used in your essay.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The variety and correctness of grammatical structures employed.
Scoring
Each of these criteria is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9. The scores from all four areas are averaged to give an overall band score for Task 2.
A high band score (7 or above) requires well-developed arguments, clear organisation, diverse vocabulary, and minimal grammatical errors.
