Nonetheless, I’ve learned to listen to my body, as quality trumps quantity when it comes to sleep.

A host of factors can throw a spanner in the works of a good night’s rest. Stress, without a doubt, is the biggest culprit, as racing thoughts can often feel like a hamster wheel you can’t get off. Environmental factors like a noisy neighbour or a room that’s too hot or cold can also be sleep saboteurs. Additionally, late-night screen time often sneaks in as a disruptor, thanks to the blue light that keeps my brain wide awake. Diet plays a role too—heavy meals or too much caffeine late in the day can act as unwelcome alarms for my system.


  1. Do you take naps during the day, and if so, how do they affect your overall sleep quality?

Yes, I’m a fan of power naps when the need arises, especially after a draining morning or a night of tossing and turning. These short bursts of rest act like a recharge button, giving me a much-needed energy boost. However, I’m careful to keep them brief—20 minutes tops—to avoid a phenomenon called sleep inertia that leaves you groggy. A well-timed nap can also help me avoid the afternoon slump, but I steer clear of overindulging as it could play havoc with my nighttime slumber.


  1. How important do you think it is to have a regular sleep schedule, and do you follow one?

A consistent sleep schedule is the backbone of a healthy lifestyle. I firmly believe in the phrase, “early to bed and early to rise.” By sticking to a routine of waking up and going to bed at the same time—even on weekends—I’ve trained my body to follow a natural rhythm. This habit acts as an anchor for my daily energy levels, reducing the dreaded Monday blues. While life occasionally throws a wrench into the works, I make every effort to get back on track to maintain my circadian rhythm.

Technology can be both a boon and a bane when it comes to sleep. On one hand, apps that play soothing sounds or track sleep cycles can be helpful. On the other, doomscrolling through social media or binge-watching shows before bed can be a real dealbreaker for good rest. I’ve learned the hard way that the blue light emitted by screens messes with my melatonin levels, leaving me wide-eyed when I should be dozing off. Now, I make a conscious effort to unplug an hour before bed and instead read a book or listen to calming music.

While I’ve been fortunate to avoid chronic sleep disorders, I’ve had my run-ins with temporary insomnia, particularly during periods of high stress or travel-induced jet lag. Meditation has been a game-changer too, allowing me to push the pause button on anxious thoughts. It’s all about finding what works for your personal sleep cocktail and being consistent in applying it.

Sleep is the unsung hero of good health, often overlooked in favour of exercise or diet. It’s also vital to create a sleep-conducive environment—think blackout curtains, a comfortable mattress, and minimal noise. Absolutely! I’ve had dreams so vivid they felt like mini-movies, from flying over cities to surreal encounters with people I haven’t seen in years. To me, they’re a creative outlet for the brain, a way of processing emotions and experiences.
