Dependence on technology

IELTS opinion essay

To what extent do you agree or disagree that people are too dependent on technology in their daily lives?

The extent to which people are dependent on technology in their daily lives is a subject of debate. While some argue that technology has become an indispensable part of modern living, others believe that excessive dependence on it may have adverse consequences. My view leans toward the middle ground, acknowledging the benefits of technology while recognizing potential issues associated with over dependence.

On the one hand, there is no denying that technology has revolutionized daily life, making it more convenient and efficient. Mobile devices, for example, have made communication and information access easier than ever before. Additionally, technology has played a crucial role in various sectors, including healthcare, education, and business, improving the quality of life and expanding opportunities.

However, there are valid concerns about the extent of dependence on technology. Excessive screen time and smartphone use, for instance, have raised concerns about physical and mental health issues, including eye strain, sleep disturbances, and addiction. Furthermore, heavy reliance on technology can lead to a loss of critical life skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective communication.

In conclusion, while technology has undeniably enhanced many aspects of daily life, there is a need for individuals to strike a balance and avoid excessive dependence. Being mindful of the potential drawbacks, such as health issues and skill atrophy, is essential. Technology should be a tool that enhances our lives, not a crutch that diminishes our abilities and well-being.
