Embarking on a journey to transcend my introverted nature and conquer limited communication skills, I delved into the intricacies of the English language about five years ago. Not claiming to be the sharpest tool in the shed, I honed my English speaking skills with dedication and persistence, knowing that it could give me an edge, not only in the professional arena but also in forging meaningful connections with a diverse array of individuals.

This linguistic prowess, particularly in English, I deem as a coveted skill, a veritable ace up the sleeve in the realm of effective communication. The dividends reaped from this proficiency have been manifold.

First and foremost, navigating interviews became a breeze after mastering the art of eloquent expression. The facility to articulate thoughts seamlessly has proven invaluable not only in professional settings but also in addressing diverse audiences and engaging in spontaneous, free-flowing conversations. Gone are the days of hesitation and stumbling over words.

Is this linguistic finesse essential for others to acquire? Absolutely. In an era where the world is a global village, English stands as the lingua franca. Students, in particular, stand to gain significantly as English serves as the conduit for international communication and academic discourse.

Now, let’s delve into the roadmap for cultivating this linguistic finesse. Mastery begins with an understanding of grammatical nuances, encompassing the labyrinth of tenses, verb forms, and subject-verb agreements. Weaving these threads of knowledge together, one can fashion a tapestry of articulate expression. Furthermore, the auditory senses play a pivotal role; regular exposure to native English speakers through podcasts, films, or conversations can be likened to a linguistic workout, enhancing proficiency.

In the tapestry of life, the skill of articulate English speaking can be likened to a vibrant thread that weaves connections, bridges gaps, and opens doors. It’s not merely a skill; it’s a passport to a world of opportunities. So, one can embrace the challenge, navigate the linguistic labyrinth, and let the eloquence of their words become a symphony that resonates across borders.

Traveling has never been my cup of tea, and I’ve always avoided it at every possible opportunity. But life has a way of throwing you into unexpected situations. Not too long ago, I embarked on a journey to Nagaland with my wife, and it turned out to be an experience I’ll never forget—though not entirely for the best reasons.

The journey was quite the adventure. It began with a gruelling three-day train ride to Dimapur, Nagaland’s largest city. The landscapes changed dramatically as we moved across regions—from bustling urban centres to tranquil, rolling hills and lush greenery. Upon arriving at Dimapur, we embarked on a three-hour uphill drive to Jalukie Village, where my wife’s family lives. The roads were winding and dotted with charming villages, and the view of mist-covered mountains was nothing short of breathtaking. However, the hairpin bends left me feeling green around the gills, as I’m not great with motion sickness.

When we finally reached the village, I was greeted with unparalleled warmth and hospitality. The locals’ friendliness and their deep connection to nature were inspiring. I immediately felt welcomed by my wife’s family and their friends. Nagaland’s culture is incredibly vibrant, from its colourful attire and soulful music to its unique culinary traditions.

On the second day, I decided to throw caution to the wind and sample some local delicacies. The spread included fermented bamboo shoots, smoked meat, and even fried insects. At first, I was hesitant, but I pushed myself to try these exotic flavours. To my surprise, the food was delicious—earthy, spicy, and full of character.

Unfortunately, my culinary bravery soon backfired. Within a few hours, I began feeling unwell, and before I knew it, I was rushed to the hospital. It turns out I had a severe allergic reaction to one of the dishes I’d tried. The whole village came together to help, and my wife was on pins and needles the entire time. By the grace of God, I recovered quickly and was discharged the next day.

This trip was a mix of challenges and learning moments. While it taught me the importance of being cautious, it also opened my eyes to the richness of a culture I’d never experienced before. I gained immense respect for the people of Nagaland—their resilience, warmth, and strong sense of community.

Though I may not be eager to venture far afield anytime soon, this trip taught me that stepping out of one’s comfort zone can lead to incredible growth and unforgettable memories. I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of diversity, even if it sometimes comes with its own set of challenges.

Note: this is a made up, spontaneous story and was framed by Jomon during one of the IELTS sessions. There is nothing to be feared when comes to Naga food.

One of my favourite relaxing places near water is a small lake located in the outskirts of my town. It’s a peaceful, serene spot, surrounded by lush greenery, which makes it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The lake is not very far from the town, so it’s easy to reach in under 30 minutes by car or even by bike.

I usually visit this place on weekends, either with a few friends or sometimes just on my own when I need some solitude. When I get there, I like to walk around the lake’s perimeter, taking in the scenic views. The air is incredibly fresh, and the gentle sound of water lapping against the shore is incredibly calming. On some days, I bring a small picnic with me, or I just sit by the water, reading a book or listening to music. Occasionally, I’ve gone for a paddle in a kayak, which is an exhilarating but relaxing way to experience the calmness of the water.

What I love most about this place is its tranquility. Unlike crowded beaches or parks, this lake remains relatively quiet, which allows me to unwind and clear my mind. The setting is absolutely beautiful—especially during sunset when the sky reflects off the water, creating a magical atmosphere. It’s a place where I can disconnect from technology and the stress of modern life, and just enjoy the simplicity of nature.

In conclusion, I like this spot so much because it offers a perfect blend of peace, natural beauty, and a sense of calm that allows me to relax and recharge. It’s become my go-to place whenever I need a break, and I always leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
